Member Profiles | Heather Shaw Menis

This week’s member profile showcases one of FGIDC’s board members, Heather Shaw Menis. Learn more about Heather and her career below!

1. How did you land your position?

I was the Marketing Director at Saks Fifth Avenue Tysons Galleria when I had a baby.  I needed more flexibility in my work schedule as a working mom, but also wanted to continue marketing fashion and luxury products, so I decided to carve my own path by opening a consulting business doing just that.
2. Where do you find your inspiration/motivation?
The network of female entrepreneurs and successful working moms in my life provide endless motivation. In this community, I feel an ever-present push to be my best self.
3. Why do you call the DC area home?

My husband and I both grew up moving all the time – we met at University of Maryland and shared a mutual love of the diversity (in activities, in people and in landscape) that the DC area offers.  We decided to make this our permanent home and are excited to give our son a chance to feel rooted in a way that we did not.

4.  What in your career are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the decision to go out on my own, pondering this prospect terrified me for years, but the autonomy is priceless.

5. Tell us about a time you felt you had failed.

Too many to count!  (Hi, I’m Heather and I lie in bed every night silently mumbling a catalog of self-directed insults) I recently took a class. The subject matter was very technical and I’m a tactile learner. So rather than working on my final project, I was staying up late every night testing my knowledge.  My project presentation was abysmal, especially for someone whose job it is to know how important presentation is! BUT, I passed and I really learned the material – I had to keep reminding myself that was the goal. I believe we all get better when we operate outside of our comfort zones – and most of those pesky haunting thoughts are a result of pushing ourselves.

6. What do you see as the biggest value of an FGI membership?
I’m blown away at every FGIDC event because of the breadth and depth of fashion talent in our city – I would probably never know all of these amazing people if it weren’t for FGI. And of course, there is no better way to get access to the international fashion community than FGI.
