On Friday, July 29 FGIDC Regional Director Elaine Mensah led an intimate discussion on the ins and outs of buying in the fashion industry with Ken Downing, the famed tastemaker who oversees women’s and men’s trends for Neiman Marcus. Over 85 fashion professionals filled the Covington Law Firm office at CityCenterDC where they enjoyed Ecco Domani’s special edition Zac Posen designed Pinto Grigio, light bites, and other refreshments before the discussion with Downing.
Ken Downing talked about his amazing career path and how he ended up the voice of Neiman Marcus fashion. Downing spoke about his frequent trips to DC and how he does not want to hear that DC is a conservative fashion city because he knows it’s not true, and he sees very well dressed individuals and edgy style. Ken also spoke about the rapidly changing landscape of retail and fashion production. He discussed how bloggers and the consumer’s desire for instant gratification has changed the dynamic of how clothes sell.
As a #memberperk, an exclusive opportunity was offered to FGIDC members. Prior to the event, select local designers were able to have a one on one meeting with Ken Downing where he privately reviewed collections with local designers Sophie Blake, Sophie Blake New York; Kim Elleen, Kim Elleen; Drew Storm Graham, SwitchWood; Elena Aiken Crusoe, Elena Design Studio; and Jayne Orthwein.
